THE women’s national cricket team, the City Pharmacy Ltd (CPL) Papua New Guinea Lewas are back in full training following last week’s announcement of the 14-member  squad to tour Samoa next month.
The Lewas squad led by captain Pauke Siaka resumed training this week in preparation for the International Cricket Council (ICC) East Asia Pacific (EAP) Regional Women’s Qualifier from July 15-22 in Apia, Samoa.
A focused Siaka was excited at the upcoming schedule at training yesterday.
“We’re feeling confident in our preparations so far. We have been the strongest team in the East Asia Pacific for a number of years now and we’ve earned our spot at number No.1 and we’re ready to maintain it,” Siaka said.
Lewas ccoach Rodney Maha has been putting the squad through paces in preparation for Samoa.
“The girls have progressed well in their training including doing specific strength and conditioning training,” Maha said.
“We have three new girls in the team from outside provinces which is a first and that’s  added some flare to the team.”
The Lewas will take on Japan and hosts Samoa in 50-over matches.
The winner from this event will progress to the global qualifier for the ICC 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup in England.
The qualifier will take place either later this year or early 2017.
