THE national women’s cricket team, the Lewas, are in good shape and preparing for the Pacific Games in July as well as the Twenty-20 World Cup qualifiers in Thailand in November.

According to Cricket PNG high performance manager, Rarua Dikana the final squad will be announced in April, before a tour of Australia and Samoa.

Dikana said it would be the first time for women’s cricket to be played in the Pacific Games and every athlete in the Lewas 25-member train-on squad was competing for spots on the final 14-member Games squad.

He said the train-on squad was made up of 10 contracted players from Cricket PNG’s development programme and the other 15  were picked from the Port Moresby Cricket Association.

Dikana, who is training the Lewas, said most of the players were part of the team that defeated Japan last year in the T20 East Asia-Pacific tournament in Japan.

The Lewas will play Samoa, Fiji, Cook Islands and Tonga in the Pacific Games.

The squad trains at the National High Performance Centre in Port Moresby on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at the Amini Park cricket nets on Mondays.
