Licensing fees slammed

Letters

I support the call made by letter writer Wilson Mack regarding the recent increases in the vehicle and licensing fees.
The increases are unrealistic and call for a nationwide survey of the communities to gauge their feeling and get their opinion.
Owning a vehicle is one’s right and no one, even the Transport Department for that matter, can deny any Papua New Guinean his or her right to own a vehicle.
The increases will really affect the low-income earners who are struggling to put food on the table.
A 10-15 per cent increase is reasonable, but currently it’s 100 per cent and it is daylight robbery, with the low-income earners the main victims. Can the Transport Department and Land Transport Authority go back to the drawing board and seek the views of the public before making any changes.
The flow-on effect of this increase will still affect the internal revenue of the State, one way or another.
