A HOUSE owned and built by the Nimamar local level government in Matzus village, Lihir, New Ireland, was razed to the ground last Saturday, police said.
The suspect was reportedly intoxicated with alcohol when he set fire to the property.
Provincial police commander Oena Afeke said the house was built two years ago but was never occupied because the suspect and his cousin, the complainant, had an argument over ownership of the land on which the property was built.
Afeke said the high-set house, valued at K180,000, was set on fire between 10pm and 11pm.
“After burning the building, the suspect fled,” Afeke said.
He said police knew the identity of the suspect.
Afeke condemned the arson, saying the property belonged to a LLG and it took a lot of effort and money to build the house.
He appealed to people in the province with information on the whereabouts of the suspect to report it to police.
