A 20-YEAR-old man was found dead hanging from a breadfruit tree at Londolovit village at Lihir, New Ireland, on Sunday.
Provincial police commander Oena Afeke said villagers made the gruesome discovery around 9am when they were about doing their daily chores.
He said the pale body was hanging on a 6m tree with the eyes and tongue protruding and a green nylon rope tied around the neck.
He said police and ambulance were called into the area to retrive the body.
“We have treated the matter as a suicide.
“But are not ruling out a possible homicide case,” he said.
“At this moment the circumstances surrounding the death is not known. Normal police investigation will continue until we establish the condition surrounding his death.”
Afeke identified the deceased as Wilson Rapis from Sianus village on Lihir Island.
He said from reports police received the victim on Jan 14 secretly told his sister that he wanted to kill himself without giving any reasons.
Afeke said the victim’s corpse is at the Kavieng Hospital awaiting a post mortem.
