TWO East New Britain women who had travelled to Lihir to sell their produce were recently arrested at the wharf by police for possessing indecent pictures on their mobile phones.
On Wednesday, Lihir District Court magistrate, Bruce Tasikul found Elly Laura 23, of Rabagi No 1. in Gazelle district and Elsie Wilik, 24, of Nakukur village in Duke of York, guilty and fined K300 each and 12 months imprisonment.
Both were charged separately under section 25A(1) of the Summary Offence Act that each did have in their possession a Nokia black phone containing coloured articles namely indecent pictures that grossly offend against accepted standards of decency.
Laura was arrested by the police at the wharf after she was acting suspicious and a search was conducted by police where a mobile phone was found in her possession. They scrolled through her phone and found a total of nine pornographic indecent pictures.
Wilik was arrested at the wharf for being in possession of illicit spirit and when taken to the police station, she tried to hide her mobile phone. Police took the phone and found six phonographic pictures.
They asked the court for leniency as both were first time offenders and showed remorse for what they had done.
Magistrate Tasikul said the State and the community’s interest often ran parallel.
“And their interests in this matter were that, this kind of activity should not be allowed to go unpunished.”
