THE National Cultural Commission (NCC) has subsidised a linguistics student’s tuition fee at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) to safeguard PNG’s indigenous languages.
This followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NCC and Linguistic Society of Papua New Guinea (LSPNG) last month.
Fourth-year linguistics student Wanpis Kii from Yampu in Ambum-Kompiam, Enga, was the recipient of the assistance.
He was accompanied by lecturers Dr Sakarepe Kamane and Olga Temple to NCC head office to receive the tuition fee subsidy of K1,000.
Kamane thanked NCC for its gesture.
“I am happy to see students, who need help, being assisted like this,” he said.
“We never know, in the future he might come back and help the organisation.”
Kamane said this would go a long way in helping Kii complete his studies at UPNG.
Temple said Kii had been struggling to complete his registration fee and the assistance was appreciated.
She said assistance was timely because he was in his fourth year and if he was late for the registration, his work on the “Engan language proverb” would be affected.
NCC acting executive director Steven Kilanda said the MoU had paved the way for the preservation, protection and promotion of PNG’s language and culture.
