GEMS such as peridot and amethyst found in Papua New Guinea has value on the international market, according to a gold buyer.
3 Power Ltd director Amit Chauhan said connection to the international market was important to get the best value for the gemstones mined in the country.
“The problem is connectivity to the international markets like India, Bangkok and Hong Kong,” he said.
“If we give the right directions to people then, hopefully, one day they would be able to reach these markets.
“Anyone with gemstones can send me the photo and I can help him to connect to the market.”
Chauhan said his company was also looking at developing innovations to stop alluvial miners from using mercury, considered to be dangerous.
“Mercury is a dangerous metal to deal with but there is the borax method to collect the gold,” he said.
3 Power Ltd deals in gold melting furnaces, crucibles, assay machine and accessories.
“Regarding small mining equipment, we deal in sluice boxes and high bankers,” he said.
Chauhan said his company was looking at innovations to bring into the alluvial space to improve safety.
“We are working on a furnace which works without gas and electricity, easy for small miners to carry anywhere and probably it will have an option to recover the mercury while smelting,” he said. Chauhan is a gemologist, lapidarist and a graduate in rough diamonds.
He said he had been working in the gold, diamond and jewellery for more than 12 years.

  • Well done Chauhan, for leading the quest to stop the use of mercury in alluvial mining and also for helping our people to connect to the right dealers for gem stones. Everyone has the right to make it big and be successful in this country. Gem stones are found throughout the country but the locals don’t know who to sell to and the value of the gem stones.

    One guys from lae supposed to be a leader of community came to POM after being advice by me that the stones he holding is Glass so please don’t come to POM.
    But he came and now when I had inspected the stone it was glass.
    Now he want me to pay the ticket back to Lae,otherwise he will go to Police ,which hurted me.
    I inspect and trying to connect the people to the buyers without any interest.
