THE illegal dumping of rubbish in the Kenabot residential area in Kokopo town, East New Britain, is creating an eyesore.
The Kokopo Vunamami Urban Local Level Government is warning residents and business houses that spot fines would be imposed on offenders.
Kokopo/Vunamami Urban Local Level Government town engineer Francis Moro said last week a resident and a business house were caught dumping rubbish on Stage Two hill and Stage Three at Kenabot and fined K500 each.
“We caught them red-handed dumping rubbish at Kenabot,” he said.
He said with the Kokopo City Commission Bill recently approved by the Government and Kokopo is developing into a city, they would be clamping down on people who did not comply with the law.
“This is a warning to the public and especially residents at Kenabot that illegal dumping of rubbish in Kokopo town will not be condoned,” Moro said.
“This is an eyesore to visitors and everybody in town and undermines our efforts and programmes to keep the town clean.”
Moro said the LLG had programmes involving local groups which cleaned up the town – cutting grass and collecting rubbish – monthly.
He said the only approved dumpsite was at Raniolo.
“If residents want to be part of our rubbish disposal programme, they can come, get registered and pay rubbish fees to have it collected,” Moro said.
