A LOCAL level government president in Northern has urged the government to ensure that recurrent grants are released before the elections in June.

“The treasury minister approved our budgets on Feb 22 but actual funding has not been allocated to us yet,” Higaturu LLG president Charles Jasari said.

“The national treasury office at Vulupindi Haus has given us our warrants but no actual funds have been remitted to the LLGs.

“We have been threatened and harassed by frustrated service providers. Our councillors are on the verge of giving up.

“We need to pay water and electricity bills as these services have been cut off. Our offices are not functioning at the moment.

“We need to be told the truth. If the national government is having problems with its cash flow, then we need to be told.

“But if it is a problem with officers at the finance and treasury department, then they need to be dealt with accordingly as they are impediments to the national government’s vision on change and improvement in service delivery.”
