LOCAL level government (LLG) election nominations started yesterday at 4pm and candidates in Central were asked to make nominations quickly as there will be only seven days for them.
Central election manager Peter Malaifeope told The National that this was one of the shortest nominations in the LLG elections and so it was important to remind candidates of the time.
“Those candidates must pay their nomination fees of K200 at their nearest Bank South Pacific and bring the receipt in for nomination,” he said.
“For Central province, there are 16 LLGs –three in Abau, four in Rigo, six in Kairuku-Hiri and three in Goilala.
“Only Koiari, Vanapa Brown, Guari, and Woitape local level government nominations will be made at the Boroko Papua New Guinea Electoral Office.
“For the rest of the other 12 LLGs, the nominations will be made at the district headquarters.”
Malaifeope said the elections in Central would cost about K2 million.
“The Central government has committed K1 million and the PNG Electoral Office will fund the other K1 million,” he said.
“However, we have only received the first quarter of the total.
“So I call on the people, this is your election, take ownership of it and respect the laws.”
Felix Mavaru Daroa, who will be contesting for the Ward 6 local level government in Tubuseria, Central, was one of the first candidates to arrive at the Boroko Electoral Office just as nominations started at 4pm.
However, he was advised to go back to his district headquarters for the nominations.
