AIYA local level government (LLG) in the Kagua district, Southern Highlands, held a swearing-in ceremony for its president and 24 ward councillors last Friday at Aiya Primary School.

They were sworn in by Mendi District Court magistrate Benjamin Tunawan.

They were the first councillors in the Kagua-Erave electorate to take their oaths of office following the recent LLG elections.

The LLG elections in the Erave district were failed by Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen with supplementary election expected to be held at a date to be confirmed. In the Aiya LLG, Ben Randa was sworn as its new president.

Local MP James Lagea witnessed the ceremony with Kagua district administrator Fr Mark Nande, Mendi District Court senior magistrate Vincent Eralia, assistant returning officer Jacob Wun and senior District Court clerk Kapa Dilini.

Lagea said he looked forward to working closely with the new LLG president and councillors.

“I have the plans and vision for the people but I need your support and cooperation,” he said.

“Some of you may be the first time to be elected and my encouragement to you is to know the meaning of what is leadership is.”
