LLG reps team up with youth authority to fight crime

REPRESENTATIVES from three local level governments (LLGs) in Western Highlands’ Mt Hagen have partnered with the national youth development authority (NYDA) to fight crime.
The representatives are from Hagen urban LLG, Hagen rural LLG and Hagen Central.
NYDA director-general Joe Itaki said the Mt Hagen city authority had taken steps to contain lawlessness and restore peace and order.
“Since the youths are deemed as the perpetrators of petty crime, the authority is working in a partnership with us to mobilise and register unemployed youths,” he said. “All youths will be placed into groups as per their LLGs and wards.
“They then elect their district youth development council executives who will be their leaders to air their issues and help in development activities.
“We want to give them (youths) a voice in the development process.”
Authority chief executive officer Leo Noki said office space would be allocated for the three youth councils.
The NYDA also conducted a capacity building training for the councils and presented three laptops and printers for their use.
