A LOCAL level government (LLG) in Eastern Highlands has set up a civil works unit to maintain basic infrastructures in the area.
Watabung LLG, in Daulo, unveiled its new works unit in Goroka to ward members president Moses Gigmai and deputy president Bire Bire.
Gigmai said from experience ,the LLG had been spending a lot of money on contractors for health facilities, schools, bridges and road maintenance, but a lot of them left unfinished work.
He said the money allocated to the LLG was not enough to cater for service delivery to the entire area.
Gigmai said since there were provisions in the law to allow LLGs to operate businesses, they opted to establish the civil works unit to get infrastructure and road projects done to generate revenue for the LLG.
“Our intention is to generate revenue in the LLG and complete the projects instead of engaging outside contractors who often do not complete projects and waste money,” he said.
“Experiences are that when contractors get paid, they pack up and go, leaving the projects incomplete.”
“Our LLG civil works unit will be called Watabung Building and Construction Ltd.
“The six wards in the LLG area are the shareholders, any proceeds will be equally shared by way of improved service delivery.”
He urged the Government to release their grants so they could start on some projects.
