A SURVIVING member of the famous Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels was the honorary guest in the official unveiling of the “Fuzzy Wuzzy War Memorial” plaque in Perth, Western Australia.
Faole Bokoi, from Manari village in Kokoda, who took part in World War II as a carrier and stretcher bearer, was invited by the organisation “Honouring Indigenous War Graves Inc” (HIWGI) to feature in the unveiling of the new war memorial erected in Bruce Rock, 254 km east of Perth.
Frank Taylor, manager and owner of Kokoda Treks and Tours, who accompanied Bokoi to the event, said that the purpose of the memorial was to remember the contributions local people in PNG made during the war.
“The memorial is dedicated to ‘the angels’ and other PNG military units who served with the Australian Forces,” Taylor said.
“The reason for the gathering was to dedicate and unveil the memorial funded and erected by HIWGI,” he added.
Taylor said HIWGI also arranged for Bokoi and his son Saii to travel to Australia for the occasion.
The event was held last Saturday and was made special when the West Australian branch of the PNG Wantoks Association (PNGWA) provided entertainment as part of the ceremony.
