Local funds tourney, feast

A MAN from Lower Mendi in Imbonggu district, Southern Highlands, gave K2,000 to sponsor a sports tournament and a feast for youths to celebrate the new year.
Nelson Mangalu, who hails from the Peya tribe in Sumia village, slaughtered 13 pigs for the feast after the sports tournament.
He said the aim was to involve them in sporting activities to celebrate the New Year peacefully.
“I do not want them celebrating with homebrew or involved in some illegal activities,” he said.
“It’s the New Year and they should look forward to a new life and a changed mindset.”
Mangalu himself said he was “aimless” at one stage in his life but decided to be involved in small business activities. It said it involved a lot of hard work and commitment.
He encouraged the youths to do something worthwhile as life was a gift from God.
Mangalu said God created people for a purpose and not all were meant to be well-educated and work in offices.
“There are many things that we can do to contribute towards nation building, even though we failed to make it through the education system,” he said.
He told the youths that they could make good money by selling agricultural products if they were willing to use the land.
He encouraged them to involve themselves in church activities.
