LIKO Alahulo is taking advantage of the growing number of education institutions and businesses in Kafuku, Goroka, by investing in rental accommodation.
He started off with a three self-contained rooms at his village for students and teachers from other provinces to attend and teach at the Gahuku High School and Mesauka Secondary School.
“I built the rental accommodation from locally available bush materials of kunai grass, trees, bamboos and pitpit in 2015,” he said.
“I use the money from the rentals to pay school fees for my three children. I noticed that there were students from other provinces coming to enroll at Mesauka Secondary School and Gahuku High School.
“The teachers at the school need affordable accommodation and I am providing this.
“I have only three rooms. I am about to complete another building also with three rooms which should be ready this week.”
He rents the room for K150 a fortnight.
Alahulo plans to build more facilities. Meanwhile, his wife Golukuto has also been busy at her onion garden.
The money she earns from the sale of onions also goes towards the children’s school fees.
Gahukuzuha community development project initiator Luti Mateho said they encouraged people to venture into economic projects to earn their living.
