Local media coverage boring

The National, Wednesday July 15th, 2015

WE are now into the final week of the Pacific Games 2015.

People in the National Capital and those who made it to the games from other provinces have enjoyed the games.

New records were set in different sports and many new friendships were made.

However, one thing that not many people noticed was the media coverage of this year’s games.

The local media has not been up to par with modern sports reporting. Journalists have faltered and a very important and opportune time to put their journalistic skills to test is about to come to an end.

All we are given by the local media is articles and interviews on PNG’s athletes and performances.

How about going out to interview athletes from other countries and visitors from other countries who are here for this occasion?

What a time to find out about former greats and champions of the Pacific Games who are here.

And what is it like for other international media personnel who are here to report on the games?

Ask investigative questions and learn at the same time from seasoned journalists from around the Pacific.

I would rather, want to learn more about other Island athletes and their preparations and sometimes struggles to make it to the games then reading all too familiar news about local athletes performances all the time.

Nevertheless, it is a great feeling to witness the Games and many of us will surely treasure this period for the rest of our lives.

I urge every Papua New Guinean to respect others who are here; greet our visitors and make them feel welcome.

Your smile is as important as your hello.
