Local resources bypassed: MP

JIWAKA Governor William Tongamp says the country has been missing out on a lot of things in the mining industry.
He told Parliament last week that things which could be produced locally such as carbon from coconut shells and lime to extract gold were being imported.
Tongamp, an engineer by profession, had worked at the Lihir, Misima, Ok Tedi and Porgera mines.
He said many highly qualified Papua New Guineans were managing mines in Australia and other countries.
He said Ok Tedi had been managed by nationals when the Government took it over in 2016 and declared profits in 2017 and 2018,but now foreigners had taken over.
“While trying to take back the country, we must look at how we can take control of the mines in the country by revisiting the laws.”
