Local ward setting up cop shop
A LOCAL ward in Chimbu’s Kerowagi and the provincial government are setting up a police station using cargo containers, to increase police presence for better and effective law and order enforcement. “This is especially for the safety of people travelling along the Highlands Highway,” Barawagi ubran local level government (LLG) ward six councillor Dickson Pumai said. “Traffic along Kerowagi and Barawagi area are often disrupted by unnecessary fights, illegal road-blocks, alcohol consumption in public places and other undesireable activities that have disrupted Government, private and public transportation and delivery of goods and services into Kerowagi and Chimbu. “The initiative by Governor Michael Dua to set up a cop shop in Barawagi is a very important development needed to address law and order issues because there is no police station in the area.” Pumai said the nearest police station was Kerowagi Police Station, which was about seven to eight kilometers away from the area. He said policemen at the cop shop would monitor traffic flow and deal with law and order issues from Kundiawa to Barawagi and to the other rural LLGs and wards. “It will also provide police presence from Kundiawa to Eastern Highlands (Goroka) and to Jiwaka.”
