THOUSANDS of people living on the border of Southern Highlands and Enga will benefit from a K1 million road funded by the Southern Highlands provincial government.
The contract was awarded to Bush Karinz Construction Ltd, a local company from the Karinz local level government area.
The road will go through Bush Karinz and connect to the Kandep district, in Enga.
Bush Karinz Construction company managing director, Peter Nupiri said people could now travel to Mendi town after a home-made bridge was replaced by a permanent steel bridge.
Southern Highlands Governor William Powi gave K1 million for it last year.
Nupiri said the road would link Posilum, Pingirip and Kandep, some of the rural places that had been ignored by the Government.
“People living on the border of the two provinces walked more than 10 kilometres to reach bus stops and this problem would be over,” he said.
He said people living in the Karinz LLG had agreed for the development of a quarry to be used for the road construction.
Noel Mek, from Posilum village, said people had struggled to have access to the outside world.
He said pregnant women had died on the road trying to reach Mendi General Hospital.
“We are grateful to Powi’s administration for bringing relief to the people in the rural areas who have no access to basic government services,” Nupiri said.
