Work has begun to restore the collapsed Bigei Bridge in Madang under supervision of the Works Department.
The bridge, along the Usino-Yal Road, collapsed a week ago.
Works has directed PNG JV Constructions to immediately connect the bridge.
Usino-Bundi MP Jimmy Uguro thanked Works, through Secretary David Wereh, for the fast intervention.
“I’m appealing to everyone that there should not be any compensation claims,” he said.
“The bridge must be fixed before construction of the road recommences.
“People must not charge for gravel, sand and anything of that nature.”
Wereh said the bridge had only collapsed on one side, and the foundation would be made solid to avoid similar problems.
Meanwhile, Uguro said most projects in the district had not commenced this year because funds were slow in reaching the district development authority.
He said when the funding from the government goes onto the district development authority, the projects launched in the district would start immediately.
He urged the people in his district to be patient and be responsible for looking after existing services in the district.
