Lockdown hurting people, economy

Letters

SUGGESTIONS that lockdown will keep us safe is offering false hope without taking into account the cost it has on the economy, peoples livelihoods now and in the long run.
I faced hardship accessing specialist clinics at the Port Moresby General Hospital since the lockdowns in Port Moresby.
This has forced me to turn to private hospitals and pharmacies which is very costly.
I have not been able to progress the medical case of my loved one for over the last six months and his condition has deteriorated to the point that I am compelled to write this.
The Covid-19 pandemic has laid bare numerous flaws in the current systems we use today.
It made obvious the fact that not one size fits all.
This pandemic has shown that the approach one considers standard on paper will not have the same outcome or benefits if applied to another’s context or may have consequences that are dire.
We have witnessed on a global scale economies shrink, lively hoods destroyed, norms disrupted all in a few months and the steps and actions taken to curb this are proving futile even in the most medically advanced nations and so-called civilised nations.
Given the accumulating cost of managing and living with this pandemic and the full impact it will have had after this is all over, it does come to an end, do we still think the current approach tutored by the first world as a standard is feasible in the real world application to the third world nations, PNG in this context.
One will argue that lifting of lockdowns is detrimental however, applying lockdowns and restriction has the same adverse effect if not worse taking into account the duration with the end to the pandemic unknown.
As painful, depressing and distressing as it may seem, we must accept the fact that some lives will be sacrificed, even our very own, if we as a country are to avoid being in a worse off circumstance on the other side of this pandemic.
It is with you our good leaders to look beyond what is before you and develop way forward for PNG.
