Lockdown to affect sports, says PM

PRIME Minister James Marape says the Government will restrict sporting activities in the National Capital District as part of a 14-day citywide lockdown following a spike in Covid-19 cases.
National federations such as the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL), PNG Football Association (PNGFA) and Cricket PNG are expected to hold meetings this week to discuss a way forward in line with the restrictions for their flagship competitions.
National Operations Centre media manager, health, Api Kassman told The National last night that their legal team were preparing the framework for the restrictions.
PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka said they would await more clarity on the restrictions before deciding what course of action the PNG National Rugby League Competition would take on the Digicel Cup.
The country’s premier rugby league competition is already underway, with round-four matches played in Port Moresby and Lae over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League acting manager Dimirit Mileng said Saturday’s scheduled restart of the country’s premier soccer competition would depend on the restrictions.
“We’re yet to receive an official notice from the national pandemic controller and the PNG Sports Foundation,” he said.
“Once we receive a circular, we will hold a meeting to discuss a way forward.
“Obviously, we can’t go against the restrictions issued by the Government.
“Whatever decision we make, it’ll be in the best interest of everyone involved in the game.
“The health and safety of everyone is paramount.”
The Isuzu National Cup, PNG’s premier 50-over tournament, started on Friday and the National Capital District Rugby Union held closed door trials on Saturday.
