Look after your yard, Kumbakor
HOUSING Minister Andrew Kumbakor recently called on BSP to provide a better housing deal for its workers.
He urged BSP to prove its worth and reputation by adhering to its workers’ demands referring to the recent strike over housing and other issues.
As a BSP employee, I must say that the bank is an industry leader in terms of rewarding employees.
To relieve the pressure on household budgets, BSP provides a universal housing allowance to every employee, including security guards, regardless of job position or job grade.
BSP is the only company in PNG to offer housing allowance to every employee.
Since 2007, the bank has increased housing allowances for staff below managerial level by a minimum of 40% and, in some instances, the increase has been in excess of 100%.
I find it absurd that Kumbakor sees fit to make such comments when he, as a minister, cannot push for an increase to the lousy K7 that has been paid to public servants since independence as housing allowance.
He cannot even push for better houses for public servants or even renovate the current government-owned houses that are falling apart.
And what is frustrating is that Kumbakor is from one of the oldest political parties in government.
Has his party ever done anything to improve conditions for public servants when it was in power?
And I have a question for him and other government leaders.
Since independence, we have earned millions, if not, billions of kina from forestry, fishing, mining, etc.
Where has all this wealth from our natural resources gone to?
We should not be suffering had the money been invested properly on basic infrastructures and services.
Can Kumbakor set a healthy precedence for a change by ensuring us, during his tenure as minister, that he will improve conditions for public servants rather than commenting on other matters that he has yet to prove his worth?
Otherwise, he should shut up and come up with better housing conditions for public servants.
Happy BSP employee
