Look into SOEs

Letters

THE government under the prime minister-ship of James Marape, should really look into correcting and amending how all the SOEs including the Kumul Holding structure is being operated.
A lot of hard earned marginalised tax payers’ money does end up in these state owned entities, but for so long and so far, nothing tangible, in terms of simple but important service delivery like basic road link/access has never been seen in the outskirts and backdrops of rural PNG.
I just would like to put up some points for the government to ponder on all the CEOs and Managing directors of all the State owned entities should be nationalised. Put up a steering committee and do selections on merit.
It doesn’t matter if most of these positions are filled by persons from one particular region, appointment should be done on merit. (Not politics and regionalism)
Look into the current Ok Tedi Mining management structure, we have qualified nationals with wealth of experience gained on recognition both within and abroad, who can handle these management roles, but are yet being overlooked, undermined and depressed.
I urge the government through its state enterprise department, mining ministry, MRA, and other selected like-minded individuals to look into how Ok Tedi is being operated, particularly the so-called consultant engagement, project implementations and its benefits, vendor engagements, check if they have merit.
A lot of money is milked out through this well strategised schemes.
Unlike the other government departments, lot of money has been mainly put into the Works Department over the last 10 years, do go back and do an audit, money spent versus the scope of job done.
Check against all contractors engaged, was the contract worth the money.
All other departments should follow suit.
Check against all the influx of foreigners entering PNG, including importing of cheap counter band product, which is posing a very a risk of health related problems.
Someone has created an unseen highway, bypassing Customs and Immigrations.
If we want to really “Take back PNG”, let us solve all our in house issues and stop the leakage first before we start seeking assistance and advice abroad.
