THE Lower Koiari League will host its semifinals with the top teams in three divisions — Under-20s, women and men — ready to showcase a feast of rugby league at Laloki Secondary School outside Port Moresby on Sunday.
Lower Koiari League secretary Robert Anton said the 16-round competition had eight teams in each division.
“We are using the top-eight format because we want every team to have a fair crack in the finals,” Anton told The National.
“And since the competition is new, we don’t have a lot of teams so we want to grow the league.
“For now, we will just stick with the top-eight format.
“We don’t want to leave out teams in the first week of the finals.”
The first week of finals were played last week across all divisions with top-four and bottom-four clashes.
The losing teams in the bottom-four clashes have been eliminated while the winners of the top-four clashes are on standby for next week’s preliminary finals. The losers will have a another shot this weekend.
Anton said Nelson Lawyers, which has jumped on board to assist with prize money, is the major sponsor of the league.
He commended the company for supporting the competition as a way to help keep youths occupied through sports.
