Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari has started cleaning up the huge, expensive and largely-inefficient public service machinery which has a cost overrun of K300 million annually.

“The public service has grown too big over the years,” Lupari told The National yesterday.

“As a result, it’s consuming almost 75 per cent of our budget, with roughly 40 per cent consumed by wages and salaries.

“It’s not performing and supporting Government policies.

“One of the things I’ve realised since taking office is that there’s no coordination of the departments.”

Lupari said he would be making a statement on how to bring the huge public service wage bill under control.

“I’ve sat down with the Secretary for Finance, Secretary for Personnel Management and we’ve gone through what needs to be done.”
