THE Nawaeb Lutheran High School in Hobu is closed after rioting that was sparked by the death of a Grade 9 student at the weekend.
Reports from the school said the student was one of a group that had gathered in the dining hall late last Saturday night.
Their gathering was broken up by a security guard who also chased them towards the Marambi River.
Deputy head teacher Lazarus Maya said three students fell over the cliff, resulting in one death while the other two managed to hold onto shrubs and were saved.
The students retaliated when they learnt about the death and chased the guard  who took refuge in headmaster Goputa Qosing’s house.
“The students, however, forced down the door and beat up the guard. They also destroyed things in Mr Qosings’ house as well,” Mr Maya said.
The guard sustained severe injuries and was admitted to Angau Memorial Hospital on Sunday.
“The Nawaeb police was called in to calm the situation while the incident is being probed by police,” Mr Maya said.
Morobe education senior professional assistant Joe Solulu visited the school on Sunday.
while Nawaeb district education coordinator and administrator visited yesterday.
