LUTU Busama, Awasa Busama and Buakap are the champions of the inaugural President’s Cup staged at Buakap Village in Salamaua LLG of Huon Gulf district, Morobe, over the long weekend.
The tournament exposed many talents from the Salamaua area.
Lutu beat Buakap 2-1 in the men’s soccer final, while Awasa held off Buakap 57-56 in the women’s basketball final and Buakap beat Naralance in the men’s final.
The men’s soccer was played in two pools of five teams, basketball  used a round robin format as there were three men’s and five women’s teams.
In the men’s soccer final, Lutu wasted no time as their midfielders coordinated the ball in the centre to set up play for the strikers to net two quick goals by the 10th minute.
The game see-sawed from that point on as Lutu defended stoutly to keep Buakap out for a 2-0 win.
Other soccer results saw Awasa beat Popdubi in a penalty shootout.
The player’s awards of the tournament went to Paidas Moi from Popdubi (soccer), Emuka Yana of Buakap for the men’s basketball and Nelly Alung of Popdubi for the women’s basketball.
All teams that made the finals walked away with cash prizes and a trophy courtesy of major sponsor Nestle (PNG) and Morobe stationary, which donated the trophies.
The tournament attracted teams from the seven villages of Laugui, Kela, Asini, Busasama, Hote, Wabubu and the host Buakap.
