THE arrival of a new airport fire engine in Madang marks the beginning of the airport’s extension programme, says National Airport Corporation Madang branch manager Jack Pilai.
Pilai said the extension programme will start on Oct 19.
He said NAC bought nine special fire engines in the United States.
Each has the capacity of storing 5678 litres of water and 798 litres of foam.
Madang was allocated two, with the first arriving yesterday.
The second one will arrive later.
He said the new fire engines were acquired through the Civil Aviation Investment Programme and funded by the Asian Development Bank.
The funding will also cover the airport extension which will see a major facelift with a new and bigger flight control tower and other facilities.
