LOCAL fishermen in Madang will receive a seed capital assistance of K10,000 from Governor Jim Kas.

The fund will help them form a cooperative society

Kas made the pledge to more than 30 fishermen from the Madang and East Sepik boarder villages who attended three weeks of training on small fishing operation and fish aggregating device construction and operation last month.

Madang provincial administration officer Peter Pasum said the instructors came from National Fisheries College in Kavieng who trained fishermen at Kayan village in Bogia.

The trainees came as far as Kopar village in East Sepik and parts of Bogia in Madang.

“The training was the first of its kind conducted at a very remote area for village fishermen to help them gain latest fishing and marketing skills,” Pasum said.

He said the locals were taught how to identify school of fish and different fish species and were given practical lessons on catching, processing, storing and marketing their catch.
