MADANG Governor Sir Arnold Amet threw his support behind the Kalibobo Annual Sports Championships with a sponsorship of K200,000 last week.
Sir Arnold, who initiated the tournament, said it was aimed at bringing together the provincial youth movement, which involves youths from the six districts, participating in the event.
The chairman of the programme, John Gringo, said the tournament would run from Jan 19-23, and had attracted teams from Madang, Bogia, Ramu, Usino-Bundi, Sumkar and Rai Coast.
Teams will be participating in basketball (mixed), soccer (men), volleyball (women) and darts (mixed team).
Teams intending to participate should see their district managers at the community development office for information on the tournament.
Tournament coordinator Atis Deme said that teams would be vying for four awards – the Angmai Bilas Cup, Sir Kubulon Los Cup, Sir Peter Barter Cup, the John Middleton Cup and Sir Arnold Amet Cup.
Sir Arnold said he hoped the event would bring together youths together and make sports a uniting factor in helping address social problems at the district level.
