THE Madang provincial government has given more than K145,000 to Team Madang for the PNG Games in Port Moresby which start tomorrow.
The provincial government has authorised K145,018 from the provincial development fund allocation to assist the 260 athletes who will be taking part in athletics, bowling, soccer, netball, volleyball, darts, hockey, basketball and disabled sports.
The team had earlier requested for K182,500 from a total expenditure balance of K289,478 but with the provincial government’s contribution the team would have a shortfall of K40,000.
Team Madang executive officer Conrad Wadunah thanked the provincial government for assisting the team.
They also thanked Sumkar MP Ken Fairweather for assisting the Madang Cricket team.
“We would like to thank the Madang provincial government for helping our teams.
“We also acknowledge individuals and the business community that have contributed to the team as they are carrying Madang’s flag to the games,” he said.
Wadunah added that Team Madang was filled with youths and it was about time the youths were engaged actively in sports.
He said sports could help reduce crime and other social problems among youths.
Wadunah was proud that a 13-year-old school boy was among the youths who will be participating at the event.
Team Madang will also be sending 22 athletes with disability.
The first lot of athletes left Port Moresby on Tuesday while the other part of the team left  yesterday  for the official opening today.
