MADANG police have recaptured a 27-year-old rapist who broke out of Beon Prison in September 2015.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said Joshua Palou, who was convicted for rape in 2013, was captured on Saturday.
“Palou, who was residing with his wife on Kranget Island, was jailed seven years for rape in Manus and was transferred to Beon in 2013,” he added.
Supt Rubiang said the capture in town was the result of good police intelligence work.
“I encourage the people of Madang to work closely with the police and report criminals and fugitives who had escaped from prisons in the past,” he said.
“That is the only and most effective way to stop criminals.
“Help us to enforce the law and maintain law and order and public safety.”
Supt Rubiang said 43 of the 48 prisoners and detainees who broke out of Beon Prison last Wednesday were still on the run.
One had surrendered, three were shot dead and another was recaptured last week.
He warned that anyone caught harbouring fugitives could be charged accordingly.
“Don’t feed or give them clothes,” he said.
