MADANG will soon have its own officers to monitor environmental impacts from the Ramu nickel project.

This was an undertaking which the National Government made to the Madang provincial government following a review last week of the Ramu nickel mine project memorandum of agreement (MoA).

The National Government will assist the provincial government by giving advice on recruiting suitable environmental officers and providing training to these officers.

Madang will fund the new office.

Recruitment and training of these officers will be done through the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).

DEC’s Goro Arigae said discussions had already begun with the provincial government.

He said the Madang  provincial government had been advised that it would need two people, one a marine specialist and the other a terrestrial biologist or a chemistry graduate.
