Nearly 200 people in Madang received the Queen’s diamond jubilee medals as part of the Independence Day anniversary celebrations for their long service to communities.
Madang Governor Peter Yama with a team from the Governor-General’s Office presented the honours to them at Laiwaden Oval on Sunday.
Ward councillors, community leaders, police officers, prison warders and public servants were congratulated by Yama.
Madang’s long-serving public servant Peter Torot, the grandson of St Peter Torot from East New Britain, stood out at the ceremony. He had served Madang since 1974 when he was a young administrator or kiap.
He said Torot served in Raicoast and moved around the other five districts.
“He shaved his first beard here in Madang and remained a loyal public servant to this day,” Yama said.
He said the provincial government and the administration would farewell Torot later this year.
