THE Madang sevens the Madgaunz are determined to produce positive results in the inaugural Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Rugby Union Supers Sevens Series.
Coach Edwin Benjamin said the team was not just at the tournament to participate but also to learn and get better. “The aim for us bringing the team is not only to showcase the young talents we have but also to learn as much as we can in order to help grow our provincial union,” he said.
They arrived last week in Port Moresby with a contingent of 16 players and two officials.
Comprising of an equal number of young and experienced players, the team is proud to represent the iconic home of the famous Kalibobo lighthouse.
“Most of our players are young talented boys who aren’t working or schooling but have put their hand up to represent Madang,” Benjamin said.
“Our preparation was a bit hard with no local competition.
“We had to find ways to keep players motivated. Thankfully the Divine Word University Ezi Cruizers team were kind enough to play us in warm-up matches.
“This gave our players some much needed match fitness.”
Benjamin said financial challenges were a major setback for the team as they could not secure a sponsor.
“We had to dig deep into our own pockets to contribute and raise funds for our medical supplies and training gear.”
