MEMBERS of the Provincial Education Board (PEB) in East New Britain have been urged to perform their tasks and responsibilities accurately according to the expectations of the division of education.
Kokopo District Court Magistrate Leonard Mesmin said this during the swearing in of new PEB members in Kokopo yesterday.
Mesmin said the members were selected by their districts, sectors and churches to be their representatives in the PEB because they had trust in them.
“I believe you all are educationists and being in the PEB is not a mistake,” Mesmin said.
“With your expertise, knowledge and experiences, you can make a difference in the education sector.
“We must be accurate in our conduct in education development as professionals because how we conduct ourselves can bring impact and make a difference to the education of our children,” Mesmin said.
Deputy PEB chairman Levi Mano said there were unsolved issues and challenges in the education sector and members should work together to find solutions in solving some of these issues.
“I am appealing to all of us to do our own assessments in our own capacities, do survey and find out exactly why many of our schools especially primary and high are still scoring below the average marks,” Mano said.
He said discipline was one area which the board should look at and urged the discipline committee members to come up with tough penalties for teachers and students if they broke any rules.
“We are treating it as it is not serious and that is why we are seeing a lot of issues in most of our schools both in the rural and urban,” Mano said.
