GEREHU Magpies lost 17-25 to rookies Pom Tech Tigers in round three of the Moni Plus-sponsored Port Moresby Australian Football League competition at the Colts Oval on Saturday.
Tigers dominated the first two quarters of the A-grade match, kicking three goals and a behind to lead 19-0 at halftime.
Magpies clawed their way back into the game in the third and fourth quarters, but fell short by eight points.
It was Magpies’ third-straight loss as they remained without a win this season.
Kila Novai, Nakikus Waba and Joe Owen were standouts for Magpies despite the loss.
Magpies coach Lagia Peter told The National after the game that he was still confident about his men improving for the remainder of the 2022 season. “We don’t have any representative or experienced players,” he said.
“Most of these players are raw talents from Gerehu.
“Some of them have just started learning the sport. It is disappointing to not win any games, yet but I am still proud of my players.
“They are competing hard in each game and that’s good.
“They have the fighting spirit, they don’t go down easily.
“They continue to challenge the opposition until fulltime.
“We just need to improve on our fitness, learn to control the ball and get our passes right.
“If we can work on those weaknesses then I am confident that we will improve our position on the ladder.”
The rookie clubs will be looking to improve their standings as the season progresses.
