Igo Mahuru’s impressive batting skills at the International Cricket Council East-Asia Pacific U19 Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Samoa has earned him a spot in the SP Sports Awards finalists’ list.
Mahuru’s shortlisting — alongside Geoffrey Loi (table tennis) and Hewago Paul Oea (AFL) — in the junior male athlete of the year category came as a surprise for the 18-year-old from Hanuabada, Central.
Mahuru is the opening batsman for the Hebou Papua New Guinea Garamuts.
This is not the first time Mahuru has being recognised for his skills.
Last year, he won the best batsman award at the qualifiers.
Mahuru topped the run-scoring tally, hitting a total of 170 runs at an average of 42.50 in all five matches.
Cricket PNG said Mahuru was hardworking, disciplined and a committed young man who associated well with his teammates and coaches.
At a young age, Mahuru developed an interest for cricket from his uncles and cousins.
“They all played in the national team and they always encourage me to play too,” he said.
Mahuru dreams of playing for the Barramundis one day.
“When I was participating in the Bank South Pacific School Cricket programme, I set that as a goal to achieve,” Mahuru said.
He took part in the programme while doing grade 10 at Badihagwa Secondary School in 2016.
His great batting skills and talent were apparent at his club Badili Wonderers.
Joining the junior national team, Mahuru had to choose between cricket and school since training sessions were held regularly.
Mahuru made the tough decision of leaving school to concentrate on cricket, with family members supporting him along the way.
Mahuru believes he still has a long way to go to realise his full potential.
