TWO-time PNG Games kickboxing gold medallist Rex Maijabe will lead a strong contigent from Hela to the PNG Games in Kimbe.
Known by his peers as Rex Mai, the 41-year-old personal staff of Tari-Pori MP James Marape said he was excited about the prospect of leading Team Hela kickboxing.
A former student of Stanley Nandex, Mai has no regrets taking up the sport after being engaged in the informal sector in Port Moresby since dropping out of Tari High School in 2007.
He said kickboxing had taken him places as a representative and personal bodyguard of Marape.
His first victory in the 87kg division in Jiwaka was the springboard in his kickboxing career.
Mai said he was selected to represent Hela at the PNG Games in Rabaul (2012) and in Lae (2014), where he won in his weight division.
With PNG Games in WNB at hand, Mai is eager to lead the 35-man team (men, women) to Kimbe to represent their province.
Apart from being a kickboxing athlete, Max works as a security officer with Corps Security.
He was plucked out of his job to provide security for Marape.
Apart from Marape’s  support to kickboxing in the province, Mai is appealing to major service providers to the LNG project in Hides to back kickboxing as well.
While Hela Wigmen and Gigira Laitepo United FC got all the mileage out of Hela’s product, the local company must also extend their support to sports such as kickboxing, boxing and weightlifting, he said.
Mai thanked local MP Marape for his support to sports and other developments in the province.
