Make it a must to have fire detectors
The National – Monday, July 11, 2011
I REFER to the comments by Lae fire station commander Alphonse Amia (The National, July 6).
I support what he said.
What I want to know is when a building has been completed, why are fire inspectors not invited to inspect and issue building certificate?
I noticed that fire detectors in most buildings are not in proper working condition, including those in shopping centres.
This is a big issue.
Employees’ safety must be a priority.
If these devices are not functioning in high rise buildings, hotels, hospitals, etc, then fire inspection unit must ensure that they are in working order.
Many of us always blame the firemen for arriving late but, as I see it, we are partly to be blamed too because landlords and building owners do not have such devices to alert the fire stations.
