Malabag: No strike but a peaceful rally
The National,Tuesday 24th April 2012
THE PNG Trade Union Congress has assured the public that there will be no strike action but a peaceful rally by members outside parliament today.
This followed an assurance by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to meet members of trade unions, civil society organisations and coalition partners to discuss issues of concern to the people of PNG.
Malabag last night confirmed that O’Neill had agreed that their discussions would centre on the election dates and the nature of the Judicial Conduct Act.
“We are hoping that from this discussion, we may be in a better position to understand the real issues behind the current political impasse and what the government agenda is over the whole range of issues.”
He said the congress had reluctantly agreed to the decision by the Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen to issue the writs on May 18 instead of April 27.
“We have all along been steadfast in our arguments that April 27 is the date for the issue of writs but the TUC is adamant that the election must be held on time,” he said.
