Malagian steps into coaching role for Tusbab

A MILD stroke may have ended Nigel Malagian’s playing days, but the former Lae City defender is making a good fist of his new role as a coach in the Madang Amateur Soccer Association competition.
He is enjoying success in the A-league as his Tusbab Blue Kumuls sit comfortably on 12 points with this weekend’s last round-one fixture left.
“I am happy to contribute to the club,” he said.
“I appreciate the opportunity given to me to contribute to football in a different capacity. When Tusbab coaching director Rachel Wadunah began focusing on Tusbab Laidamon and the national women’s team, the management asked me to help guide the team, and I willingly accepted the invitation. It’s hard seeing these players play, as I have played with most of them in the local competition.
“It brings back memories of our 2018 and 2019 premiership win.
“Mentoring them from the sideline is challenging now, as I see myself playing alongside them during the weekend games. But I am happy that the players are enjoying the games.
“This weekend will be tough for us as we face reigning champions Lusco, but I have faith in my players.” Blue Kumuls face Lusco at Laiwaden Oval on Sunday (3.40pm kick-off).
