THE Salvation Army on Wednesday received a timely assistance from the Rimbunan Hijau Group of companies and the Malaysian Association of Papua New Guinea through a charity basis working relationship.
High Commissioner of Malaysia Datin Seri Blanche Olbery presented K40,000 and RH Group executive director Ivan Lu gave K20,000 to the church-run organisation to assist them in their humanitarian work.
Major Philip Maxwell received the assistance on behalf of Salvation Army thanked the organisations and said the money would go a long way to funding its various projects and initiatives plus the disaster victims of mv Rabaul Queen and the landslip in Southern Highlands which the Salvation Army was currently working on.
“Salvation Army is concerned about the social needs of the people and so it is doing what it can to support these needs. Currently it is working closely with the disaster victims of the landslide and the sunken mv Rabaul Queen in Lae.
“It has the heart and hand to support the people and is happy to do so,” Maxwell said.
The K20,000 from RH Group was taken from a K650,000 raised from the 2011 MBC Charity Golf event held in Port Moresby while the rest was given to 15 other charity arms.
It was also a pledge made by Lu at the launch of the Salvo’s Red Shield Appeal last year.
Lu, who is also a board member of the Red Shield Appeal said: “RH has realised the need and appreciated the work of the Salvation Army and will support where it can and how it could.”
Olbery said after eleven years of supporting charity work in PNG, the Malaysian community was happy to support and work with various charity arms to meet the needs of the people.
She said the Malaysian community is working on delivering its support to the two major natural disasters that recently hit the country and applauded the committment by the RH Grp and Malaysian Association.
