IT will be the biggest ever ending for the Moresby North East Sports programme with K300,000 allocated for the Easter Cup.
So far K1 million was budgeted from the Moresby North East District Services Improvement Programme funds for human resource development in sports since 2010 when the programme was introduced.
The programme is the brainchild of local MP and Community Development Minister Andrew Mald and will wind down with the champions of champions challenge for the Mald Easter Cup in soccer, volleyball, basketball (men and women) and touch (men).
From the 22 locations, the winners scooped K1,000 and trophies and for the champion’s tags, a bonus of K500.
The presentation of the awards will be after the Mald Easter Cup at Unagi memorial oval.
Youth and sports chairman Rex Kuman said since the Easter and Christmas Cup was introduced the programme has been a success.
Kuman said youths in the electorate were recognised as unfortunates with high risks of HIV/AIDS, illicit drugs, prostitution, home brew and petty criminal activities painted a bad image of the communities.
He said Mald’s initiative was not a one off sponsorship but a continuous programme which was just part of other impact projects the MP funded.
