MALE inmates of Bomana Prison in Port Moresby have received more than 700 food items and merchandise from members of the Catholic church.
The donation was made by the Caritas PNG and the associates of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of St Martin de Porres Parish in Morata.
Sister Josepha Nebos of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart said it was not an easy task to make arrangements with the prison authorities.
But she is grateful that they were allowed to continue their outreach programme.
“We did not come here to visit only the Catholic church prisoners.
“We came here to visit each and every one of you because Jesus did not come down to earth for the righteous only.
“He came for everyone, including the sinners,” she said.
Acting prison commanding officer Yelli Ouifa said the visit and donation meant a lot to the 700-plus inmates.
“Most times, when people come to visit, they only visit the minimum-security unit and the female unit.
“(This time), the visiting group prepared something for everyone,” he said.
On behalf of the inmates, Michael Hurotove said it was the only time they could enjoy a change of diet from their usual rice and tinned fish or meat.
Caritas PNG representative Mavis Tito thanked the companies which donated food.
