Malum should know better

COMMENTS by Steve Malum in The National yesterday about Stanley Tepend to be the PNG Hunter’s coach is shallow.
It is disrespectful and an insult to PNGNRFL management and the independent recruitment team from PNG and Australia who were involved in selecting Matthew Church.
The requirement to be a PNG Hunter’s coach is not about having Digicel Cup experience, wining premiership in the Digicel Cup, assisting Michael Marum in test matches, winning the Melanesian Cup or beating British Lions recently.
Queensland Intrust Super Cup is sanctioned by the Australia National Rugby League and is a second-tier league to NRL.
To be a coach of any team affiliated to the Queensland Cup, the candidate should meet NRL requirements. One of the important criteria is having Australian level 3 coaching certificate.
Being a rugby league administrator Malum should know that Tepend does not have that.
None of the other Digicel Cup coaches have level 3 coaching certificate. Michael Marum is the only person who has that level of coaching qualification.
Furthermore, Tepend has not been involved with the PNG Hunters game nor being Marum’s assistant coach at the PNG Hunters. The challenge now is to ensure Tepend gets the level 3 coaching certificate to vie for the post in the future.
