A 42-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly made defamatory comments against a senior Government official, was arraigned yesterday at the Waigani Committal Court.
Magistrate Rebecca Kwayaila read the charge to John Simon Amaiu, from Lyapos village in Kompiam-Ambum, Enga.
He was charged under the Cybercrime Code Act for allegedly publishing defamatory material against the secretary for Finance Dr Ken Ngangan.
Police alleged that on Feb 25, in Port Moresby, Amaiu intentionally, and without lawful justification, published defamatory material against Dr Ngangan on Facebook.
Amaiu was alleged to have posted the following: “Who really is Dr Ken Ngangan. A wolf in sheep’s skin and a small corruption temptation.”
That post went viral on Facebook, generating negative comments against the secretary and tarnishing his reputation.
Dr Ngangan laid a complaint with the special police investigation team and Amaiu was identified, tracked down and arrested.
The matter was adjourned to Oct 12 for police to compile a hand-up brief.
Amaiu is out on a K300 bail.
